La idea del descubr imiento de América The Idea of the Discovery of America Edmundo O’Gorman “I would dare say this book makes O’Gorman another Humboldt” José Gaos • An historical-philosophical treatise that studies the ideas about the discovery of America. • It is a mixture of great erudition and scientific rigor that destroys the European and American myth about the discovery of our continent. • This is a magnificent book of history, testimony of a philosophical reflection concerning our past and present. This latest book by Edmundo O’Gorman is much more than a simple history of the discovery of America; instead, it is the history of the generally-accepted idea of the discovery of America and how this idea with the passing of time became so prevalent in the collective psyche. With a bold and transparent prose, O’Gorman’s narration transcends mere descriptive exposition. Page after page are replete with profound reflections that give life to an innovative and revolutionary idea that counters the European version of American consciousness. 19 UNAM Foreign Rights 2015 By the same author Historiology: Theory and Practice Edmundo O’Gorman Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Shadows Banishment: Light on the Origin Image Cult Our Lady of Guadalupe of Tepeyac Edmundo O’Gorman Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Mexico: The Trauma of its History Edmundo O’Gorman Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México About the author Edmundo O’Gorman (Mexico City, 1906-1995) is an historian.
