• José Vasconcelos is an essential figure in modern Mexican history. • Ulises Criollo is one of his most important and best-written works. • The book went through five editions during its first year, and there have been a total of ten until now. • An autobiography providing an in-depth look at Mexican political history. About the author José Vasconcelos (Oaxaca, 1882 - Mexico City, 1959) was a philosopher, lawyer, politician, writer, and historian. He was a central figure in the construction of modern Mexico. He founded and presided over the Ateneo de la Juventud Athenaeum of Youth, he was President of the National University, he served as Secretary of Public Education, and he was Director of the National Library. He organized the first literacy campaign in Mexico and he made other important educators get involved, namely, Gabriela Mistral and Pedro Henríquez Ureña. He was the editor of two journals –El maestro and La antorcha– and a series of universal classics. In addition, he was the founder of El Colegio de México and was a member of the Mexican Academy of Language. Among his vast corpus of works, the following are highlighted: La raza cósmica, misión de la raza iberoamericana The Cosmic Race, La sonata mágica: cuentos y relatos The Magic Sonata: Stories and Tales, Estética Aesthetics, Historia del pensamiento filosófico History of Philosophical Thought.
