About the author José Vasconcelos (Oaxaca, 1882 - Mexico City, 1959) was a philosopher, lawyer, politician, writer, and historian. He was a central figure in the construction of modern Mexico. He founded and presided over the Ateneo de la Juventud Athenaeum of Youth, he was President of the National University, he served as Secretary of Public Education, and he was Director of the National Library. He organized the first literacy campaign in Mexico and he made other important educators get involved, namely, Gabriela Mistral and Pedro Henríquez Ureña. He was the editor of two journals –El maestro and La antorcha– and a series of universal classics. In addition, he was the founder of El Colegio de México and was a member of the Mexican Academy of Language.
