About the author Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora (Mexico City, 1645-1700), an historian, cartographer, and poet, was one of the most outstanding and polemical protagonists of New Spain literature. He worked as the Royal Cosmographer, and for more than twenty years he was a professor of astronomy and mathematics at the Royal and Pontifical University.
