About the author Clementina Díaz y de Ovando (Laredo, Texas, 1916-Mexico City, 2012) was an emeritus scholar at the Institute of Aesthetic Research and member of the Board of Governors of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. She was awarded the National University Prize in 1988 and was named the University Historian in 1994. She joined the Mexican Academy of History in 1974 and was a permanent member of the Mexican Academy of Language beginning in 1983.
