Recognized internationally for his essays on classical and contemporary philosophy, and as one of the most lucid students of Mexican poetry, Xirau has also taught a notable group of academics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Such authors as Erich Fromm, Octavio Paz, Alfonso Reyes, Antonio Alatorre, and Adolfo Castañón have praised Xirau’s writings. Xirau has received the 1988 Alfonso Reyes International Prize and the 1995 National Prize for the Sciences and Arts.
