Folio 027 El derrumb e de la estatua . Hac ia una crítica del art e público (1952-2014) The Falling Of The Statue Towards a Critique of Public Art (1952-2014) A people´s imaginary is constructed on the basis of a series of cultural practices that range from the customs and ways of life of a community to the productions that aim, under orders from those in power, to generate the great symbols of identity for fatherland, nation, culture, and religion. The art of the second half of the twentieth century, especially in Mexico, sought to subvert practices that aimed to instrumentalize people. This exhibition explores the ways in which a variety of modern and contemporary art practices have emerged out of critique: a demolition and an alternative search for a national public art; it deconstructs the ideas of the statue and the monument, while at the same time exploring nomadic, ephemeral practices that intervene in social space so that public space may be re-signified as a field of vital political tensions.
