The Lost is based on material filmed in Berlin during the 1930s. The rise of the Nazi regime puts an end to the production of this film. Reynolds’ work comprises the discovery, reconstruction and conclusion of the film between 2011 and 2013. The artist explores the specificity of film as a medium through deconstructive operations that enable the spectator to become aware of his or her place. The Lost is a mise-en-scène that alludes to Barthes’ displacement in his essay, “The Death of the Author,” in which he attributes the action that configures a work’s meaning to the reader.
